Artificial Intelligence-Based Autonomous Decision-Making Systems for Next-Generation Smart Applications

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, edge intelligence, and autonomous computational frameworks has accelerated the development of intelligent systems capable of making complex decisions with minimal human intervention. Next-generation smart applications require decision-making architectures that can process heterogeneous data sources, adapt dynamically to changing environments, and provide secure, explainable, and context-aware outcomes. Traditional decision-support mechanisms often depend on centralized processing models and predefined rules, limiting scalability, responsiveness, and operational intelligence. This research review investigates the foundations, architectures, and practical implications of Artificial Intelligence-Based Autonomous Decision-Making Systems (AI-ADMS) for emerging smart applications across domains such as healthcare, finance, autonomous mobility, industrial automation, cloud infrastructure, and digital ecosystems.
The study adopts a structured literature synthesis methodology based exclusively on recent research contributions related to AI automation, intelligent orchestration, cloud-native systems, predictive analytics, cybersecurity governance, edge intelligence, and autonomous agents. The analysis identifies major technological components including machine learning-driven reasoning, deep reinforcement learning, generative AI-based automation, real-time analytics, autonomous agents, digital twins, and secure AI infrastructure. The findings indicate that autonomous decision-making systems enhance operational efficiency, predictive capability, resource optimization, and adaptive intelligence. However, challenges related to explainability, ethical governance, cybersecurity risks, data dependency, and computational complexity remain significant barriers to widespread deployment.
The research establishes a conceptual framework integrating AI models, scalable data architectures, secure cloud-edge environments, and autonomous control mechanisms for future smart applications. The study highlights that successful implementation requires a balanced approach combining algorithmic intelligence, infrastructure resilience, regulatory compliance, and human-centered governance. The proposed analysis provides theoretical and practical insights for researchers, organizations, and technology developers working toward reliable and scalable autonomous intelligent systems.
