FOREGROUNDING AND IMAGERY IN ENGLISH LITERARY TEXTS

The article explores the relationship between foregrounding and imagery in English literary discourse from the perspective of cognitive stylistics and modern linguistics. Special attention is devoted to the mechanisms through which foregrounding contributes to the creation of imagery and intensifies the aesthetic and conceptual impact of literary texts. The study examines different types of foregrounding, including deviation, parallelism, repetition, and stylistic markedness, as well as their interaction with metaphorical and symbolic imagery. The analysis demonstrates that foregrounding functions as a cognitive and stylistic mechanism directing the reader’s attention toward semantically significant elements of the text and enhancing the process of conceptualization. Through examples from English literature, the article reveals how foregrounded linguistic structures contribute to the formation of artistic concepts and the reader’s emotional response.
