Abstract

Phraseological units (PUs) – including idioms, proverbs, and other fixed expressions—are not only semantic curiosities but also vital pragmatic tools in modern English. This article examines how PUs function in context to achieve communicative goals beyond their literal meanings. Drawing on contemporary phraseological research and corpus-based examples, we outline key pragmatic functions of PUs such as conveying stylistic nuance, expressing evaluation, intensifying illocutionary force, and shaping discourse structure. The analysis demonstrates that PUs carry connotations and cultural references that speakers use to influence listeners, intensify an utterance’s persuasive power, or succinctly summarize complex ideas. We adopt a descriptive methodology, reviewing literature and examples from the British National Corpus to illustrate each function. Findings indicate that evaluative and stylistic uses of phraseological units are most prevalent, while directive and cumulative (knowledge-preserving) uses are less frequent. Ultimately, understanding the pragmatic aspects of phraseological units provides deeper insight into how idiomatic language enriches communication—enhancing expressiveness, clarity, and cultural resonance in English discourse.
