Abstract

This article explores the pedagogical value of dictionary use in the development of learners’ text production capabilities. Writing in a second or foreign language presents lexical, syntactic, and organizational challenges that learners must overcome to produce effective texts. Dictionaries—both monolingual and bilingual—serve not only as lexical reference tools but also as cognitive aids that facilitate language awareness and self-correction. Through a mixed-methods investigation involving writing tasks, learner surveys, and instructor observations, this research identifies a positive correlation between dictionary literacy and the quality of student writing. Findings suggest that explicit dictionary training contributes to improved lexical precision, syntactic variety, and textual coherence in L2 writing. Pedagogical recommendations are offered for integrating dictionary strategies into writing instruction to enhance autonomous learning.
