THE MURKY WATERS OF MEANING: A STUDY OF PHRASEOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN TRANSLATION

Phraseological units (PUs), with their inherent cultural and linguistic specificities, pose a significant challenge in translation. This study investigates the complexities of translating PUs, focusing on the types of problems encountered and the strategies employed by translators to overcome them. Through a comparative analysis of source and target texts across various language pairs, we identify key issues such as semantic opacity, structural divergence, and cultural untranslatability. The findings reveal that effective translation of PUs requires a deep understanding of both source and target cultures, as well as creativity in adapting linguistic structures and conveying intended meanings. The study highlights the importance of considering the communicative function and overall context when translating PUs to maintain the original impact and intended effect.
