Effective language instruction goes far beyond the spoken word. In the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, teachers’ gestures serve as a powerful nonverbal tool that can bridge gaps in understanding, sharpen classroom management, and enrich the overall learning experience. Teacher gestures are integral to conveying meaning in an environment where nuances in language may present significant learning challenges. This article discusses the types and functions of gestures from hand and head movements to posture, and highlights research-backed insights into how these nonverbal cues can enhance comprehension, manage classroom dynamics, and motivate learners. At the same time, it considers potential pitfalls, emphasizing the need for balanced and culturally sensitive use.
