THE ROLE OF GENES REGULATING THE IMMUNE RESPONSE AND ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF CYTOMEGALOVIRUS INFECTION

xAbstract
CMV infects up to 60-90% of the adult population and poses a serious threat to immunocompromised patients and newborns. The virus expresses a homologue of interleukin 10 (cmvIL 10, UL111A), which suppresses the production of IFN γ, TNF α and IL 6, which contributes to evasion of immune control and long-term persistence. HCMV induces the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which activate NF κB-dependent transcription of the IE1/IE2 genes, which is necessary for efficient viral replication. The balance between prooxidant and antioxidant status is determined by the activity of the Nrf2/ARE pathway; disruption of this balance aggravates inflammation and tissue damage during infection.
