Abstract

This article explores the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM), a traditional approach to second language teaching, and examines its relevance and applications in modern education. While GTM has long been criticized for its focus on grammar rules and translation exercises at the expense of communicative competence, this study highlights how the method can be effectively integrated with contemporary language teaching strategies. The article discusses the evolution of GTM, its strengths in developing grammatical accuracy and vocabulary, and its limitations in fostering fluency and speaking skills.Furthermore, it examines the potential for blending GTM with more communicative approaches such as Task-Based Learning (TBL) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which emphasize interaction and real-world use of language. This hybrid methodology is seen as a means of addressing the needs of diverse learners, combining the analytical rigor of GTM with the practical application of language in communicative contexts. The role of technology in adapting GTM to digital platforms is also explored, focusing on tools that facilitate grammar practice, translation, and immediate feedback. The article concludes by advocating for a balanced approach, where GTM serves as a solid foundation for language learners, while also incorporating modern pedagogical techniques that emphasize communicative ability, fluency, and real-world usage. This framework offers a comprehensive and dynamic approach to second language teaching in today’s globalized and technologically advanced educational environments.
