Abstract

This paper explores the theoretical underpinnings of developing students’ discourse competence, emphasizing its significance in effective communication and academic success. It discusses various linguistic, cognitive, and pedagogical approaches that contribute to discourse competence, such as sociolinguistic theory, communicative competence frameworks, and discourse analysis. The study highlights the role of context, coherence, cohesion, and pragmatic awareness in building learners’ ability to produce and interpret connected speech or writing. Recommendations for improving teaching strategies aimed at enhancing students’ discourse skills are also provided.
