NEUTRAL CHARACTER IDIOMS IN ENGLISH: SEMANTIC AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES

This article explores neutral character idioms in English language, focusing on their semantic, structural, and functional features. Neutral character idioms represent phraseological units that describe personality traits, behaviors, and characteristics without conveying positive or negative evaluations. Through the analysis of over 70 neutral character idioms collected from lexicographic sources and literary texts, this study identifies the main semantic fields, structural models, and cultural aspects of these expressions. The research reveals that English neutral character idioms primarily relate to appearance, behavior patterns, thinking style, and life experience. Structurally, these idioms demonstrate a preference for verb-based constructions and comparative patterns. The study also examines the translation challenges these idioms present and offers strategies for their appropriate rendering in other languages. The findings contribute to the fields of phraseology, linguoculturology, and translation studies.
