Abstract

Metaphors play a crucial role in political discourse, shaping public perception, framing ideologies, and making complex political phenomena comprehensible. This study investigates metaphor usage in contemporary English political discourse through a corpus of 50 texts including speeches, debates, and commentaries from 2018 to 2024. Using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and conceptual domain analysis, metaphors were categorized into WAR, JOURNEY, BUILDING, NATURAL FORCE, MACHINE, and HEALTH domains. Results indicate that WAR metaphors dominate, emphasizing confrontation and urgency, while JOURNEY and BUILDING metaphors highlight strategic planning, progress, and institutional development. NATURAL FORCE and MACHINE metaphors convey dynamism and systemic order, respectively. The study demonstrates that metaphors function as cognitive and persuasive tools, structuring political thought and reflecting ideological positions in English political communication.
